Procedure

Colonoscopy

An examination of the large bowel, from the inside.

A flexible camera is used to examine the full length of the large bowel. It is the most reliable way to investigate a persistent change in bowel habit, bleeding, or unexplained anaemia, and it is also used for surveillance where there is a known reason to monitor.

Polyps, small growths that are common and usually harmless but that can change over time, can generally be removed during the same procedure. That is why colonoscopy is both an investigation and, often, a treatment.

Why it might be recommended

  • A change in bowel habit that has persisted
  • Bleeding from the bowel
  • Unexplained anaemia
  • Investigation of inflammatory bowel disease
  • Surveillance where there is a known reason to monitor
  • Removal of polyps found during the examination

What to expect on the day

  • Bowel preparation is taken beforehand, following the clinic's instructions
  • Dietary adjustments for a day or two before
  • Sedation is generally offered
  • Usually carried out as a day case procedure
  • Arrange for someone to accompany you home

This page describes the procedure in general. The preparation for your own appointment is confirmed by the clinic, because it depends on what is being looked for and on your own medical history.
